The haze situation in Sarawak is becoming increasingly concerning, with the number of areas recording unhealthy Air Pollutant Index (API) readings rising to 11 as of 6am today.
Based on data published through the Department of Environment’s (DOE) Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS), the Serian IPD monitoring station recorded the sharpest increase, with its API reaching 189, bringing it close to the “very unhealthy” category.
Ten other monitoring stations also recorded unhealthy readings.
Samarahan recorded an API of 171, followed by Kuching at 166, Bintulu at 159, Samalaju at 156 and Mukah at 155.
Sibu recorded an API of 154, while Sarikei registered 153 and Sri Aman 152. Miri and the Miri Industrial Training Institute (ILP) recorded readings of 135 and 111 respectively.
Two other stations remained in the moderate category but were also edging closer to unhealthy levels, with Limbang recording 81 and Kapit 73.
The latest figures indicate that air quality has continued to deteriorate in several parts of Sarawak, particularly in major areas where API readings have climbed significantly.
An API reading between 101 and 200 is classified as unhealthy, while readings from 201 to 300 fall under the very unhealthy category.
Unhealthy air quality can pose health risks, particularly to vulnerable groups such as children, senior citizens and people with respiratory problems or chronic illnesses.
Members of the public are advised to monitor the latest air quality updates and reduce outdoor activities if the haze situation continues to worsen.
