The Road Transport Department (RTD) is reviewing potential enforcement action against workshops involved in carrying out extreme and dangerous motorcycle modifications.
RTD senior enforcement director Datuk Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan said a detailed study is currently being conducted to assess possible measures.
“It is time for us to look into the need for action against workshops. So today, I am stating that we will conduct an in-depth study covering various aspects for possible enforcement against workshops,” he said at a press conference on Ops Ekstrem at the Kuala Lumpur RTD headquarters.
He added that further announcements would be made once the study is completed.
Kifli said RTD would also collaborate with several agencies, including the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry, to monitor the sale of motorcycle accessories and spare parts used for performance and speed modifications.
He said other agencies involved include the Customs Department and local authorities to ensure compliance and strengthen enforcement coordination.
Earlier, RTD revealed that motorcycles with extreme modifications costing up to RM18,000 had been detected during Ops Ekstrem, with more than 300 motorcycles seized nationwide so far this year, mostly in Kuala Lumpur.
Among the modifications identified were engine and exhaust alterations, removal of rear brakes, ECU tampering, extended swingarms, use of narrow tyres commonly known as “tayar sotong”, and engine swaps carried out without RTD approval.
