‘As Long As BN Won, Not PH’ — Shahidan Reveals PAS Election Strategy

Date:

PAS openly supported Barisan Nasional (BN) candidates in constituencies where the party did not field its own candidates during the 16th state elections, Datuk Seri Dr Shahidan Kassim revealed.

Speaking in the Dewan Rakyat on Wednesday during the debate on the Communications and Multimedia (Amendment) Bill 2026, the Perikatan Nasional (PN) Arau MP said PAS had been transparent about its stance from the very beginning.

“We honestly and openly said we would support BN wherever PAS was not contesting. That was our contribution,” Shahidan said.

He added that PAS was willing to forgo winning seats of its own if it meant preventing Pakatan Harapan (PH) from securing victory.

“We didn’t mind not winning seats as long as BN won, and not PH,” he said.

In the Johor state election held on July 11, BN recorded a landslide victory after winning 48 of the 56 State Legislative Assembly (DUN) seats contested. PH secured the remaining eight seats, while both PN and PAS failed to win any constituency.

Shahidan, who is also PAS Perlis Deputy Commissioner III, claimed the election results reflected growing public rejection of PH, arguing that the coalition had also suffered setbacks in previous elections.

He further claimed that PH had been rejected in Sabah and expressed hope that similar outcomes would be seen in Negeri Sembilan and eventually across the country.
