Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has maintained that the party remains strong despite several of its leaders announcing their resignations from party positions.
“Insya Allah. Bersatu is still strong,” he said briefly when approached by the media after casting his vote today.
The statement came after several Bersatu leaders in Perlis recently stepped down from their party roles, including Perlis Menteri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah.
Abu Bakar confirmed yesterday that he had resigned as a member of Bersatu’s Supreme Leadership Council (MPT), explaining that he wanted to focus fully on managing the state administration.
Apart from Abu Bakar, Sena assemblyman and state executive council member Marzita Mansor had also submitted her resignation from the party leadership position last week.
Bersatu Perlis secretary and Senator Azahar Hassan also announced his decision to leave the party and relinquish all his positions with immediate effect.
Commenting on Abu Bakar’s resignation, Muhyiddin said he did not want internal party matters to be discussed publicly before obtaining further details.
“He (Abu Bakar) resigned from his position as an MPT member but he remains a Bersatu member.
“However, I will obtain a full report on the actual situation. Issues involving the party should not be discussed too much outside,” he said.
Meanwhile, Abu Bakar previously explained that his decision to step down from the MPT was due to time constraints that made it difficult for him to attend central-level meetings, while wanting to prioritise efforts to develop Perlis as his state administration term has about a year remaining.
