The political cooperation between Barisan Nasional (BN) and Perikatan Nasional (PN) for the Negeri Sembilan state election may not necessarily be suitable for adoption in other states, including Pahang, according to Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Sharkar Shamsudin.
Sharkar, who is also the Pahang State Legislative Assembly Speaker, said each state has its own political environment and factors that must be considered before any similar cooperation is formed.
“What is happening in Negeri Sembilan is specific to Negeri Sembilan.
“The people of Negeri Sembilan understand what approach works for them, but the same strategy may not necessarily apply in Pahang, Johor, Melaka or Selangor,” he was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian.
He made the remarks when asked whether the BN-PN cooperation could be expanded to other states, including Pahang, which is expected to hold its next state election by February 2028.
Sharkar said the evolving political landscape requires parties to adopt a more flexible and open approach when planning their strategies.
He added that Umno could no longer approach politics in the same manner as during periods when the party dominated the federal government and several state administrations.
“There are now 10 Malay-based parties, giving voters more choices. Umno is no longer the only option,” he said.
