Warisan president Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal said the party has instructed its secretary-general to lodge police reports over two instances of alleged fake news circulating online.
He said one involved a purported letter claiming that Warisan had decided to withdraw from the Unity Government, while another alleged that he had appealed for an individual to be released from Immigration detention.
Shafie said the party is currently awaiting a report from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) before deciding on further action.
“At the same time, we have instructed our lawyers to take civil action against those we suspect,” he said.
On legislation governing social media, Shafie said having laws in place would serve little purpose without effective enforcement.
“It is useless if the Act is not enforced,” he said, stressing that Warisan’s official position should only be communicated through authorised party leaders and official communication channels.
Meanwhile, Warisan’s branch meetings are scheduled to take place from July 24 to August 25, followed by divisional meetings from September 11 to October 5.
The party’s annual general assembly will be held in Sandakan on October 30 and 31, with the location chosen as a gesture of appreciation to areas outside Kota Kinabalu.
Shafie said Sandakan’s selection also reflected the city’s importance to Warisan.
Following the annual general assembly, the party will conduct internal elections at all levels as part of its preparations for the upcoming general election.
