Gerakan has suspended its Johor liaison committee following a unilateral decision by the state chapter to withdraw from the upcoming Johor state election.
Party secretary-general Wong Chia Zhen said the central leadership was not consulted and had not approved the move to pull out from the election.
He confirmed that the suspension of the Johor Gerakan liaison committee was decided during an emergency meeting chaired by party president Datuk Dr Dominic Lau.
“The Johor Gerakan Liaison Committee is suspended pending an investigation,” he said in a statement.
Reports suggest the state chapter’s withdrawal may be linked to dissatisfaction over seat distribution within the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition.
However, vice-president Koo Shiaw Lee reportedly denied this, stating that the decision was based on organisational readiness, grassroots mobilisation capacity, and resource allocation.
Wong stressed that the central committee views the withdrawal as a serious breach of party discipline, collective leadership principles, and party constitution procedures.
To ensure administrative continuity and avoid disruption to election preparations, the central committee has appointed deputy president Oh Tong Keong as acting Johor liaison committee chairman.
He also urged party members to remain calm, respect the decision, and continue focusing on campaigning for PN candidates in the Johor state election.
