A new police guideline book has been introduced to help school liaison officers deliver more structured and effective briefings on social issues affecting students.
Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said the initiative was one of the key outcomes of a coordination meeting between the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and the Kelantan State Education Department (JPN), which focused on tackling social issues among schoolchildren and improving cooperation between both agencies.
Known as Buku Mesra, the guideline book was inspired by former Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay and officially launched on July 9.
Mohd Yusoff said the book serves as a comprehensive reference for school liaison officers, outlining appropriate approaches when conducting awareness sessions for students and teachers.
“It provides clear guidance on what officers should and should not do during school briefings, ensuring that the information delivered is suitable, structured and easy for students to understand,” he said.
He explained that while police officers previously visited schools to deliver talks based on selected topics, future sessions would be better coordinated with the state education department to ensure they address students’ specific needs.
Briefings will be held at appropriate times, including during school hours, with content tailored according to students’ age groups and education levels.
For example, separate sessions may be conducted for pupils in Year One to Year Three and other age groups based on arrangements made by the education department.
Mohd Yusoff said sexual harassment is among the key issues requiring greater awareness, as many students may not fully understand what constitutes inappropriate behaviour.
He added that the initiative is expected to strengthen cooperation between the police and the education department while promoting early intervention and targeted education to help prevent social problems among students.
