Malaysia And Turkmenistan Agree To Boost Energy And Trade Cooperation

Date:

Malaysia and Turkmenistan have agreed to strengthen cooperation in the energy sector while expanding bilateral ties across trade, investment, transportation, education and technology following Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s official visit to the Central Asian nation.

In a joint statement issued after the visit, both countries reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing diplomatic relations and exploring new areas of collaboration aimed at achieving mutual economic growth and long-term strategic benefits.

A major focus of the discussions was the oil and gas industry, with both leaders recognising Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) for its three decades of operations in Turkmenistan and its significant contribution to the country’s energy development.

The two sides also welcomed the signing of several agreements involving Petronas and Turkmen state energy firms, including arrangements to expand upstream activities and further develop Turkmenistan’s hydrocarbon resources.

In addition, both governments exchanged several key documents, including an Air Services Agreement, a memorandum of understanding on diplomatic training and scientific exchange, and another MoU covering transport cooperation, alongside an agreement between the national academies of sciences of both countries.

Malaysia and Turkmenistan further agreed to deepen cooperation in science, technology and innovation, as well as culture, tourism, sports and higher education, including academic partnerships involving Universiti Tenaga Nasional and institutions in Turkmenistan.

Both nations also expressed support for closer collaboration on sustainable development, climate resilience and environmental protection, while recognising the importance of global and regional efforts to combat climate change.

Prime Minister Anwar’s visit to Turkmenistan from June 18 to 19 was made at the invitation of President Serdar Berdimuhamedov, marking his first official trip to the country since taking office in 2022.
