Malaysia’s Longest River Bridge Enters Final Construction Stage Ahead Of Gawai Opening

Date:

Sarawak’s coastal transport network is set for a major boost as the Batang Lupar Bridge enters the road surfacing stage, bringing the long-awaited project closer to opening to the public.

Deputy Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development of Sarawak Aiden Lariwoo recently shared photos of the ongoing asphalt paving works on Facebook, giving the public an update on the bridge’s latest construction progress.

Previously reported as the longest river-crossing bridge in Malaysia, the Batang Lupar Bridge stretches 4,884 metres across the Batang Lupar River.

The bridge is expected to open before the Gawai Dayak celebrations on June 1, offering improved road connectivity for residents travelling between Samarahan, Sebuyau, Betong and surrounding coastal areas.

The project links Samarahan’s Sebuyau district to Triso in Betong via Pulau Rabu and features 87 river piers along with two giant bridge towers standing 111.6 metres tall.

With a total project cost of RM848.7 million fully funded by the Sarawak government, the bridge is regarded as one of the key infrastructure developments under the state’s coastal road network expansion.

Once operational, the bridge will replace the long-standing Sebuyau-Triso ferry service that residents have depended on for years, reducing delays caused by ferry waiting times, tidal conditions and bad weather.

The new connection is also expected to significantly shorten travel time between Kuching and Sibu to around three to three-and-a-half hours.

Beyond improving travel convenience, the bridge is anticipated to strengthen logistics efficiency, tourism, trade activities and economic ties across Sarawak’s coastal regions.

For many rural and coastal communities, improved road connectivity is expected to positively impact access to education, healthcare, business opportunities and daily travel planning.

Meanwhile, the Sarawak Public Works Department has also announced plans for the 2026 Batang Lupar Bridge Half Marathon in conjunction with the bridge opening.

The event is expected to feature a 5km fun run, 10km race and 21km half marathon, allowing participants to experience the new landmark while enjoying scenic river and bridge views.

Further details regarding registration and event dates will be announced at a later stage.
