New MyKad With 53 Security Features To Launch This June

Date:

Malaysia’s new MyKad, set to be introduced in June, will come equipped with 53 security features including a quick response (QR) code aimed at strengthening enforcement and preventing identity fraud.

Badrul Hisham Alias said the official launch of the upgraded MyKad would be announced by the Ministry of Home Affairs Malaysia, adding that the National Registration Department was fully prepared for its implementation.

Speaking during the department’s media engagement session in Putrajaya on Thursday, he said the existing MyKad currently carries 23 security features, but the new version has been significantly enhanced to include 53 advanced elements.

Among the upgraded security measures are laser engraving, ultraviolet (UV) features, holograms, guilloche patterns, microtext technology, QR code verification for enforcement purposes, as well as a chip with enhanced encryption capabilities.

Badrul Hisham said the government remains confident that MyKad has never been easily cloned due to its existing security protections, but the latest upgrade reflects efforts to further strengthen the national identity system amid evolving technological and security challenges.

He added that the new MyKad structure and enhanced security framework are part of the government’s broader commitment to creating a more modern, secure and trusted identity ecosystem for Malaysians.

“In an era of identity forgery threats, cross-border crimes and misuse of digital technology, the country requires a more dynamic and reliable identity system,” he said.

At the same event, Badrul Hisham also confirmed that there would be no renewal or upgrade involving MyKid cards for now. However, two additional identification cards — MyTentera and MyPoca — are expected to be introduced.

Earlier this year, Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail reportedly described the introduction of the new identification document as a significant milestone, especially as the Malaysian passport continues to rank among the world’s most trusted travel documents.

Badrul Hisham also expressed appreciation to media practitioners, saying the media today plays a crucial role not only in delivering news, but also in safeguarding the credibility of information and maintaining social stability.
