New Party BERSAMA Aims For Youth-Driven, Gender-Balanced Line-Up

Date:

Parti Bersama Malaysia (BERSAMA) is targeting at least 50 per cent women candidates and 70 per cent candidates aged below 50 for any elections, including the upcoming Negeri Sembilan state election.

Its chairman, Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli, said the party, which will contest independently without any coalition, has greater flexibility in selecting its candidates.

He said BERSAMA is currently still accepting applications online from individuals interested in becoming candidates for the Johor and Negeri Sembilan state elections.

“We are making every effort to field more qualified women candidates from all communities, including Malay, Chinese and Indian,” he said.

Rafizi said the party’s main goal is to ensure that 70 per cent of its candidates are under the age of 50.

He added that the decision for BERSAMA to go solo also makes it easier to shortlist and match candidates to suitable constituencies.

“Each seat has different requirements. Some are more suitable for Malay, Chinese or Indian candidates, so this process needs careful consideration,” he said.

Meanwhile, he revealed that about 25,000 members have registered with BERSAMA so far, describing it as an unexpected development.

Rafizi also said the early response was surprising as the party is still new and does not have major political figures.
