Opposition MP Calls To Raise Chief Justice Retirement Age To 70

Date:

Opposition MP Wan Ahmad Fayshal Wan Ahmad Kamal (PN-Machang) has called on the government to raise the retirement age of the Chief Justice from 65 to 70, citing the need to allow experienced and capable judges to continue serving, similar to practices in countries like the United Kingdom.

He questioned why former Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat could not have her tenure extended after reaching the age of 65, while similar extensions are possible for positions such as the Chief Commissioner of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (SPRM), Tan Sri Azam Baki.

“Tengku Maimun is fully capable of serving, as evidenced by her recent appointment as a Professional Professor at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). In the UK, the retirement age is over 70, and the same applies in other countries. Why was Tun Tengku Maimun denied this last year?” he asked during a debate on the Royal Address in the Dewan Rakyat today.

Wan Ahmad Fayshal also raised concerns over the appointment of Federal Court judge Tan Sri Ahmad Terrirudin Mohd Salleh to the Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC), citing unresolved allegations regarding leaked JAC meeting minutes linked to Ahmad Terrirudin.

“I request the government to explain why he was appointed to the JAC,” he added.
