Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has dismissed claims that he purchased a luxury BMW for his personal use, describing the allegation as false and misleading.
Speaking at the Yok! Meriahkan Johor! Undi Harapan programme in Senggarang on Thursday, Anwar said rumours circulating on social media accusing him of buying a new luxury vehicle were untrue.
“Some people claim that Anwar says he wants to help the poor but then buys a big, brand-new BMW. I did not buy it. It is an old vehicle. Why spread lies?” he said during his speech.
Anwar also clarified that the Mercedes-Benz he currently uses was a gift from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ibrahim, and is not his personal property.
He explained that the vehicle had been registered under the Prime Minister’s Department and stressed that it was not owned by him privately.
“People should not think I am like others who misuse or steal public funds,” he added.
The clarification follows claims circulating on social media regarding the ownership of the BMW used by the Prime Minister.
Earlier this week, the Prime Minister’s Department and the Ceremonial and International Conference Secretariat (BIUPA) confirmed that the BMW was an existing government asset and not a newly purchased official vehicle.
The statement also explained that the vehicle is managed by BIUPA and designated for official government logistics and duties.
Also present at the event were Pakatan Harapan Communications Director and Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, along with PH candidates for the Johor state election, including Onn Abu Bakar (Senggarang), Mohd Khuzzan Abu Bakar (Semerah) and Felicia Poh Rui Ling (Penggaram).
Johor heads to the polls on Saturday, with Pakatan Harapan contesting all 56 state assembly seats.
