Selangor State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Speaker Lau Weng San says no decision has been made on whether any state seat has become vacant following claims involving the status of a state assemblyman.
Lau said a comprehensive review involving all assembly members, regardless of political party, is currently underway before any announcement is made.
“I will provide an update once the review is complete. We need to examine all possibilities and ensure nothing is overlooked,” he told reporters at the Selangor State Assembly.
He added that no official notification has been submitted to the Election Commission (EC), as no final decision has been reached.
According to Lau, the review will be conducted in accordance with the Federal Constitution and the Selangor State Constitution.
He also clarified that the absence of a state assemblyman from a sitting does not automatically result in a vacant seat.
Under the law, a seat is only considered vacant if an assemblyman fails to attend state assembly sittings for six consecutive months without official leave or a valid reason, such as medical leave.
Earlier reports stated that whether a by-election will be held for the affected Selangor state seat depends on the Speaker’s decision before the matter can be referred to the Election Commission.
The assemblyman at the centre of the issue was absent on the opening day of the latest Selangor State Assembly sitting, although the seat involved has yet to be officially identified.
