TMJ Fires Back At Rivals After FAM Congress Showdown

Date:

The Regent of Johor, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, has criticised certain parties for what he described as repeatedly shifting narratives to mask failures following the Football Association of Malaysia’s (FAM) Extraordinary Congress Meeting (EGM) held on Thursday.

In a broader context, the ongoing debate within Malaysian football governance continues to highlight differing views on reform, transparency and the direction of the national sport’s administration.

In a series of Instagram Stories posted after the meeting, Tunku Ismail shared photographs and screenshots involving Selangor representatives who opposed proposed amendments to FAM’s statutes during the EGM.

One of the posts featured the Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) owner seated with Selangor FC chief executive officer Dr Johan Kamal Hamidon, accompanied by remarks criticising a rival football project.

He claimed that hundreds of millions in government funding had been spent without producing results over nine years, adding that attempts were being made to influence outcomes through formal complaints and appeals for point deductions.

Tunku Ismail further alleged that some parties were repeatedly changing their narrative each year in order to divert attention from failures.

In another post, he shared an image of Selangor FA deputy president Datuk Seri Shahril Mokhtar holding a “No” placard during voting at the EGM, alongside the caption “Return football to the people.”

A separate post featured a screenshot from FAM’s live stream showing Shahril with Selangor FA secretary-general Izrin Nabil Ismail, where Tunku Ismail suggested that some parties were resisting reform efforts when external football bodies were involved.

The EGM saw delegates vote on several proposed constitutional amendments, with some changes being rejected, reflecting differing positions among member associations on governance reforms within Malaysian football.
