US President Donald Trump has used the recent migrant surge in Spain’s Ceuta territory as a political argument against his Democratic opponents, warning that a similar situation could happen in the United States if they return to power.
Trump, in comments reported by Fox News, referred to images of migrants entering Ceuta and claimed the situation represented what could happen in America in the future under Democratic leadership.
“It’s terrible. Remember that picture. That’s going to be us in three years if the wrong side gets in,” he was quoted as saying.
The White House has highlighted the incident in Ceuta, a small Spanish territory located on the Moroccan coast, by linking it to Trump’s long-standing focus on tightening immigration controls in the US.
The issue comes as Trump faces declining approval ratings, with reports suggesting his support has dropped to the low 30 per cent range, while Democrats are seeking gains in the November midterm elections.
Republicans have previously relied on immigration concerns as a key political issue, with Trump’s 2024 election campaign against Democrat Kamala Harris partly driven by voter concerns over illegal immigration at the US-Mexico border.
Vice President JD Vance also shared footage of the migrant situation in Ceuta on social media platform X, describing it as a warning about the impact of mass migration.
White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, a key figure behind Trump’s immigration policies, also posted footage of the incident while criticising Democratic immigration approaches.
The remarks have intensified the political debate over migration, with the Trump administration continuing to push for stricter border measures and using international migration issues to support its policy stance.
