Malaysia’s challenge at the Macau Open 2026 came to an end after all remaining national representatives failed to progress beyond the semi-final stage at the Macau East Asian Games Dome on Saturday.
Professional mixed doubles pair Hoo Pang Ron and Lai Pei Jing were the first Malaysians to bow out after suffering a straight-games defeat to top seeds Jiang Zhen Bang and Wei Ya Xin of China. Despite putting up a stronger fight in the second game, the Malaysians eventually fell 11-21, 22-24.
The country’s hopes in the men’s doubles event were also dashed when professional duo Low Hang Yee and Ng Eng Cheong were outclassed by Indonesia’s fourth-seeded pair Ali Faathir Rayhan and Devin Artha Wahyudi. The Malaysians struggled to find their rhythm and went down 12-21, 12-21.
In the women’s doubles competition, second seeds Ong Xin Yee and Carmen Ting were unable to overcome Thailand Open champions Bao Li Jing and Cao Zi Han from China. The Malaysian pair fought hard but ultimately lost 18-21, 13-21, ending their bid for a place in the final.
Malaysia’s challenge in the men’s singles also came to a halt after Eogene Ewe failed to build on his impressive quarter-final victory over Singapore’s second seed Jason Teh. Ewe was beaten 15-21, 18-21 by China’s Hu Zhe An in a closely contested encounter.
Completing a disappointing day for the national contingent, men’s doubles pair Chia Weijie and Teo Ee Yi were comfortably defeated by South Korea’s Jin Yong and Lee Jongmin. The Korean combination dominated throughout the match to secure a convincing 21-4, 21-11 victory.
The results mean Malaysia will not have any representation in Sunday’s finals, bringing the nation’s Macau Open 2026 campaign to a premature end despite several encouraging performances throughout the tournament.
