Malaysia’s men’s doubles pair Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani kept their Thailand Open campaign alive after booking a spot in the quarter-finals with a straight-sets victory in Bangkok today.
The world No. 9 duo displayed signs of returning to their best form as they overcame China’s Huang Di and Liu Yang 21-14, 24-22 in a 46-minute second-round clash at Nimibutr Stadium.
It was the first meeting between the Malaysian pair and the world No. 36 Chinese combination.
Sze Fei-Izzuddin will next take on Scottish brothers Christopher Grimley and Matthew Grimley in tomorrow’s quarter-final after the Scots defeated Malaysia’s new pairing of Chia Wei Jie and Teo Ee Yi 26-24, 21-10.
The former world No. 1 Malaysians are chasing their second title of the season after lifting the Indonesia Masters crown in January. However, the pair have struggled for consistency in recent months, suffering early exits in their previous four tournaments.
Meanwhile, three more Malaysian men’s doubles pairs are scheduled to play their last-16 matches later today.
In a separate match, Malaysia’s newly formed pair Haikal Nazri and Bryan Jeremy Goonting bowed out after losing 12-21, 19-21 to India’s world No. 4 duo Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy.
