Malaysia’s top men’s doubles pair Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani battled back from a game down to secure a place in the semi-finals of the Thailand Open today.
The world No. 9 duo overcame Scottish brothers Christopher Grimley and Mathew Grimley in a hard-fought quarter-final clash at Nimibutr Stadium in Bangkok.
After narrowly losing the opening game 19-21, the Malaysians regrouped strongly to dominate the next two sets 21-15, 21-8 in a match that lasted 49 minutes.
The victory sends Sze Fei-Izzuddin into a challenging semi-final showdown against India’s top seeds Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, who are currently ranked world No. 4.
The Malaysian pair are chasing their second title of the season after capturing the Indonesia Masters crown in January.
They are also aiming to ensure Malaysia retains the Thailand Open men’s doubles title after compatriots Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik emerged champions in last year’s edition.
Sze Fei and Izzuddin are now Malaysia’s sole remaining representatives in the World Tour Super 500 tournament after all other national players were eliminated in either the opening or second rounds.
