Alibaba has launched its latest flagship artificial intelligence (AI) model, Qwen3.8-Max, marking another major milestone in China’s rapidly advancing AI industry.
Officially unveiled on August 3, the new foundation model features 2.4 trillion parameters, making it the most powerful model in the Qwen family to date. Alibaba also announced that the model will be open-sourced next week.
According to the company, Qwen3.8-Max delivers major improvements beyond natural language conversations, particularly in coding and AI agent capabilities.
Benchmark tests indicate that the model’s performance in software coding and autonomous AI agent tasks is on par with Anthropic’s Fable5, one of the leading AI models developed in the United States.
The launch also makes Qwen3.8-Max the second Chinese AI model to surpass the two-trillion-parameter mark, following the release of Kimi K3.
Alibaba said the model is capable of independently handling software engineering projects that take more than 10 days to complete without requiring continuous human supervision.
The company added that the AI can generate production-ready results across hundreds of specialised fields and perform complex system-level planning and execution tasks.
Among its capabilities, Qwen3.8-Max can reportedly carry out more than 500 rounds of autonomous optimisation during advanced chip design projects.
In the latest rankings published by Arena.ai, the model scored 1,668 points in the Frontend Code Arena, placing it fourth globally.
It currently ranks behind Claude Opus 5 (Max) with 1,705 points, Kimi K3 (Max) with 1,676 points, and Claude Opus 5 (High) with 1,669 points.
The latest release highlights China’s growing presence in the global AI race as domestic technology companies continue developing increasingly powerful large language models to compete with leading international rivals.
