A woman in China says her life was permanently changed after undergoing a double-eyelid surgery that allegedly left her unable to close her eyes or stop tears from constantly flowing.
The woman, identified under the pseudonym Wang Li, from Suzhou in Jiangsu province, reportedly paid 12,000 yuan (around RM7,800) in 2020 for the cosmetic procedure performed by a practitioner identified as Meng Moufang.
According to Chinese media reports, Wang later suffered severe complications after the surgery, including eyelids that could no longer fully close and abnormal tear gland secretion.
A judicial medical assessment later classified her condition as a Grade 9 disability.
Following legal action, Meng was convicted of illegal medical practice and sentenced to six months’ detention. The court also ordered compensation payments totalling 380,000 yuan to Wang.
However, the dispute later escalated online after Wang’s sister-in-law publicly shared details of her ordeal on social media.
Wang claimed Meng believed the posts were made by her personally and subsequently filed another lawsuit alleging that she had violated a settlement agreement previously signed between both parties.
According to Wang, she had earlier signed a settlement document and eventually received around 850,000 yuan in total compensation before the online dispute erupted.
The court later ruled partially in favour of Meng and ordered Wang to return 200,000 yuan from the compensation amount.
Wang said she was dissatisfied with the ruling and later applied for prosecutorial supervision, but her request was rejected.
She revealed that years after the surgery, she still cannot properly close her eyes and continues suffering from uncontrollable tearing.
“I even sleep with my eyes open,” she reportedly said.
Wang also claimed the practitioner later uploaded videos online allegedly cursing her and her family members.
Due to prolonged sleep problems and emotional stress, Wang said she was later diagnosed with depression and anxiety disorders.
She further expressed anger after discovering that Meng had allegedly reopened another cosmetic surgery clinic elsewhere and had reportedly obtained approval for sentence execution outside prison earlier this year.
Wang added that she previously lodged a police report over insulting online content allegedly posted by Meng, but the case was later dropped after investigators concluded there was insufficient evidence of criminal conduct.
She has since filed a private legal action through the courts.
On May 23, Wang reportedly received an official notice from prosecutors rejecting her latest application to challenge the earlier court ruling.
