An unemployed man allegedly threatened a trader and his family with death and was charged in the magistrate’s court today with criminal intimidation.
Ooi Teik Kuan, 44, pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to him by a court interpreter before Magistrate Nadratun Naim Mohd Saidi.
According to the charge, Ooi allegedly intimidated Chew Chee Hong, 46, at Chew Jetty at 9.18am on February 7, 2025, by uttering words indicating an intention to kill him and his family.
He was charged under Section 506 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of two years, a fine, or both. If the threat involves death or grievous hurt, offenders may face up to seven years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Ahmad Danial Amir Saad requested bail be set at RM6,000. Ooi, represented by National Legal Aid Foundation lawyer Farah Hamizah Hasan Gani, requested minimal bail, citing his unemployment, high blood pressure, a fractured leg, and responsibility for his 70-year-old mother.
Magistrate Nadratun set bail at RM3,500 with one surety and fixed January 28 next year for the next mention, pending submission of documents and appointment of legal counsel.
“The accused is also prohibited from disturbing the victim or prosecution witnesses until the case concludes,” the magistrate added.
