A wedding celebration turned chaotic yesterday when a suspension bridge collapsed, sending more than 50 guests into the Sungai Chatel Damai.
According to Lata Rek sub-district head Mohd Zaki Saari, the groom’s party from Pasir Puteh was leaving the venue at around 2pm when the incident occurred, while guests from the bride’s side had just arrived. The two groups met on the bridge just before it gave way.
As a result, a man suffered a fractured leg after hitting river rocks, and a child sustained a head injury requiring multiple stitches. Three others reported minor injuries and breathing difficulties.
Mohd Zaki noted that the suspension bridge, which serves five households, had undergone several repairs. It is a key access route frequently used by pedestrians and motorcycles, although an alternative route exists, it is distant and only accessible by motorcycles.
Manek Urai assemblyman Fauzi Abdullah visited the site yesterday, confirming that the collapsed bridge will be repaired immediately. Inspections revealed that the anchoring cables embedded in concrete were worn and need replacement. Authorities will be approached to secure urgent funding to ensure safety and prevent a recurrence.
