A French couple is facing possible deportation from Thailand after being fined for engaging in sexual activity in public on a beach in Phuket, an incident that has sparked widespread backlash online and renewed calls for stricter tourist conduct enforcement.
The pair, both aged 24, were allegedly seen performing the act at Layi Beach in the Kathu district of Phuket on Friday night (April 10), with photos and videos of the incident quickly circulating on social media and drawing criticism from both locals and tourists.
Authorities said the couple carried out the act in full view of members of the public, prompting concerns over public decency and the impact such behaviour could have on the island’s reputation as a major tourist destination.
Following the viral circulation of the footage, officers from Kamala Police Station tracked down the couple at their hotel in Patong later that same evening and took them into custody for questioning.
They were subsequently charged with public indecency offences for exposing themselves or engaging in obscene acts in a public place. Each of them was fined 5,000 baht (about RM200), which is the maximum penalty under the relevant offence.
Beyond the fines imposed, Thai authorities confirmed that the case will be referred to immigration officials for further review, which could result in visa cancellation and deportation proceedings against the couple.
Officials have since reiterated warnings to foreign visitors to respect local laws and cultural norms, stressing that inappropriate behaviour in public spaces can lead to legal consequences and damage the country’s tourism image.
