Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), a newly formed political party founded by popular actor Joseph Vijay, has achieved a sweeping victory in the 2026 Tamil Nadu State Legislative Assembly election, reshaping the state’s long-standing Dravidian political landscape.
Based on early election results, TVK is projected to win more than 100 of the 234 assembly seats, marking a remarkable debut for a party contesting its first major state election on a large scale.
The result is being described as a historic political shift in Tamil Nadu, drawing comparisons to past waves of change led by cinema icons such as M G Ramachandran, who played a key role in the rise of the AIADMK decades ago.
One of the standout surprises of the election was the victory of R Sabarinathan in Virugampakkam constituency, who is the son of Vijay’s former personal driver. He secured the seat with a majority exceeding 22,000 votes, emerging as one of the most notable new faces in the TVK wave.
His win is seen as part of TVK’s broader strategy of fielding younger candidates from diverse backgrounds, aimed at challenging the dominance of established political parties in the state.
The election also saw significant upsets, with several senior leaders from major parties such as the DMK losing their seats. However, final results indicate that some prominent figures, including Udhayanidhi Stalin, managed to retain their constituencies.
Despite its strong performance, TVK is reportedly still short of the 118-seat majority required to form a government outright, opening the door for potential coalition negotiations.
The emerging political scenario is expected to trigger talks with parties such as Congress, AIADMK, and smaller regional groups, which may play a decisive role in the formation of the next state government.
Political analysts have described the outcome as a major realignment in Tamil Nadu politics, which has long been dominated by Dravidian party structures for nearly six decades. Attention is now turning to post-election negotiations and government formation in the coming days.
