The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a thunderstorm warning, with heavy rain, lightning and strong winds expected across multiple states until 7pm today, Sunday (May 17, 2026).
In a statement issued at 4.10pm, MetMalaysia said the affected areas include Perlis; Kedah (Kubang Pasu, Kota Setar, Pokok Sena and Padang Terap); Perak (Kinta, Kampar, Batang Padang and Muallim); Pahang (Raub, Jerantut, Bentong, Temerloh, Kuantan, Pekan and Rompin); Selangor (Hulu Selangor, Gombak and Hulu Langat); Negeri Sembilan (Jelebu, Seremban, Port Dickson, Kuala Pilah, Rembau and Tampin); Melaka; and Johor (Tangkak, Muar, Batu Pahat, Kluang, Mersing and Kulai).
In East Malaysia, the warning covers Sarawak, including Kuching, Serian, Sarikei, Sibu, Mukah, Kapit (Song, Kapit and Bukit Mabong), Bintulu (Tatau), Miri (Miri and Marudi), and Limbang.
In Sabah, the affected areas are the Interior, West Coast, Tawau, Sandakan (Tongod, Telupid and Kinabatangan) and Kudat (Kota Marudu and Kudat).
MetMalaysia said a thunderstorm warning is issued when signs indicate storm activity with rainfall exceeding 20 millimetres per hour, which is expected to last for more than one hour.
It added that the warning is a short-term alert, valid for no more than six hours per issuance.
