Police have linked the fatal attack on a 22-year-old man outside an eatery in Pekan Nanas last month to a suspected secret society recruitment dispute, with seven individuals expected to be charged with murder today.
Acting Johor police chief Deputy Commissioner Hoo Chuan Huat said all seven suspects have been arrested and will be brought before the Magistrate’s Court for charges under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
He said the decision to charge the suspects followed instructions from the Johor Public Prosecutor’s Office, which directed that the case proceed under murder provisions.
In a broader context, authorities have consistently warned that involvement in secret societies and organised criminal groups often leads to violent clashes, particularly among young individuals.
Hoo said three earlier detainees have since been released and will instead be used as prosecution witnesses after being granted bond under Section 118 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
He added that police initially detained 10 individuals, aged between 18 and 28, in separate raids conducted in Pontian and Batu Pahat to assist investigations.
During the operations, officers also seized several vehicles, clothing, face masks and weapons believed to have been used in the fatal incident.
Preliminary checks revealed that several suspects had prior criminal and drug-related records.
The victim was found dead on May 21 after being attacked in front of a restaurant, with police confirming he had been stabbed and slashed by unidentified assailants.
