PM Anwar Dismisses Talk Of Early GE16 Amid Johor Election Speculation

Date:

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has dismissed speculation that the federal government will move to dissolve Parliament in line with the upcoming Johor state election, saying the unity government remains focused on governing the country.

Speaking briefly to reporters on the sidelines of the Energy Transition Conference 2026, Anwar said the decision to dissolve the Johor state assembly was entirely a state matter and should not be linked to federal political timing.

In a broader context, questions over the timing of Malaysia’s next general election have resurfaced following renewed political activity at state level, with observers watching for possible alignment between state and federal polls.

Anwar, who is also Pakatan Harapan chairman, reiterated that his administration’s priority is to carry out its responsibilities rather than engage in election speculation.

He was responding to questions on whether Parliament would be dissolved following the Johor state assembly’s recent dissolution on Monday.

The 16th Johor state election must be held within 60 days of the dissolution of the state legislative assembly.

In the 2022 Johor election, Barisan Nasional secured 40 of 56 seats, while Pakatan Harapan won 12, Perikatan Nasional took three, and MUDA secured one seat.

While speculation continues about a possible early general election potentially in 2026, the current federal mandate only runs until February 2028.
