Viral Orange Smoke Leads To Discovery Of Chemical Leak At Pasir Gudang Factory, Authorities Monitoring Situation

Date:

A chemical leak was detected at an industrial facility in Pasir Gudang on Thursday, prompting an emergency response from the Fire and Rescue Department and environmental authorities.

The incident occurred at a factory located along Jalan Keluli in the Pasir Gudang Industrial Area, where a storage tank containing chemical waste was found to be leaking.

Pasir Gudang Fire and Rescue Station operations commander Faisal Ismail said emergency services received a distress call at approximately 11.59am.

Following the alert, six firefighters and a Fire Rescue Tender (FRT) vehicle were dispatched to the scene to assess and contain the situation.

According to Faisal, information received from the Department of Environment (DOE) revealed that the leak involved a 200-litre industrial tank containing spent inorganic acid, classified as scheduled waste SW206.

“The leak was detected at a factory operated by Wilgreen Recovery Sdn Bhd,” he said in a statement.

Authorities from the Fire and Rescue Department and the DOE are jointly monitoring the site to ensure the situation remains under control.

Faisal said the affected chemical waste had already been transferred into the factory’s scrubber system as part of containment and mitigation efforts.

He added that the operation remains ongoing and that assistance from the Hazardous Materials Special Operations Team (Hazmat) has been requested to support response efforts at the site.

Meanwhile, Johor DOE director Dr Mohd Famey Yusoff confirmed the incident and said investigations are continuing.

“We are still conducting investigations at the location,” he said.

The incident drew public attention after photographs and videos showing orange-coloured smoke in the Pasir Gudang industrial area began circulating on social media platform Threads.

The images sparked concerns among workers and nearby residents about possible health and environmental risks.

However, authorities have not issued any public safety warnings or evacuation notices, and there have been no reports of injuries or immediate danger to surrounding communities.

Investigations remain ongoing as officials work to determine the cause of the leak and assess any potential environmental impact.
