A 44-year-old oil rig worker has died after reportedly suffering chest discomfort while working at the Guntung-Delta Oil Platform in Paka, Terengganu, on Wednesday.
Dungun District Police Chief Superintendent Nik Ab Halim Nik Mat said preliminary investigations revealed that the local man had complained of discomfort in his chest at around 6am before his condition worsened.
The worker was later found unconscious inside a room on the offshore platform at approximately 7.30am, prompting an immediate emergency response from medical personnel stationed at the facility.
According to police, platform medical staff administered emergency resuscitation procedures before arrangements were made to airlift the victim to Hospital Sultanah Nur Zahirah (HSNZ) in Kuala Terengganu for urgent treatment.
The victim was transported by helicopter and arrived at the hospital at about 11.22am. However, despite efforts by medical teams, he was pronounced dead while receiving treatment in the hospital’s red zone.
Authorities said a post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death. The case has been classified as a sudden death, and further investigations are ongoing.
The incident highlights the importance of prompt medical attention in high-risk workplaces, particularly in offshore industries where access to healthcare facilities can be challenging during emergencies.
