Lee Zii Jia Eyes Strong Canada Open Start As He Seeks Return To Form

Date:

Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia will spearhead the nation’s men’s singles campaign when the Canada Open gets underway at the Markham Pan Am Centre in Markham, Ontario on Tuesday.

The world No. 65 enters the Super 300 tournament hoping to rediscover his best form after a challenging period affected by injuries and inconsistent performances. He is the only Malaysian men’s singles player directly qualified for the main draw.

Joining the campaign through the qualifying rounds are world No. 73 Cheam June Wei, world No. 102 Jacky Kok Jing Hong and world No. 133 Huan Kai Hern, as Malaysia looks to make an impact despite having no seeded players in the men’s singles event.

Zii Jia faces a difficult opening-round encounter against former world No. 1 and current world No. 38 K. Srikanth of India. The match presents an immediate opportunity for the Malaysian to avenge last week’s second-round defeat to Srikanth at the US Open.

Although Zii Jia holds a 5-3 advantage in their overall head-to-head record, Srikanth claimed victory in their most recent meeting before finishing runner-up at the US Open, where he lost to Taiwan’s Su Li Yang in the final.

The Canada Open represents another important chance for Zii Jia to rebuild confidence in a season that has yet to meet expectations. The former Asian champion has competed in nine World Tour events this year but has struggled for consistency, suffering six first-round exits, two second-round defeats and a second-round qualifying exit at the Orleans Masters in March.

His recent performances have been particularly disappointing, with three first-round eliminations in his last four tournaments. After battling fitness problems since late 2024 and throughout 2025, Zii Jia is still working to regain the sharpness that once established him among the world’s elite shuttlers.

Victory over Srikanth would provide a significant confidence boost and could set up a second-round clash against either Canada’s Joshua Nguyen or Taiwan’s Liao Jhuo Fu.

Meanwhile, the qualifying rounds will see June Wei take on Canada’s Wang Yan Qing, Kai Hern face Italy’s Fabio Caponio, while Jacky opens his campaign against Japan’s Koo Takahashi.

With no Malaysian men’s singles player entering the tournament as a seed, the Canada Open will serve as another important test for the country’s independent players. However, much of the spotlight will remain firmly on Zii Jia as he looks to turn his season around with a strong performance in Canada.
