Cases involving children aged between 10 and 14 who were linked to drug abuse in Terengganu increased by 16.7% during the first quarter of this year, raising concerns over the growing involvement of younger individuals in substance-related problems.
National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK) director-general Ruslin Jusoh said seven children in the age group were recorded in drug-related cases during the first quarter of 2026, compared with six cases during the corresponding period last year.
He said the increase, although involving a relatively small number of cases, should not be overlooked as early exposure to drugs could have serious consequences for children, families and the wider community.
Ruslin was reported as saying this during an event at Felda Tenang, Besut, today, where he stressed the importance of addressing drug abuse among young people before the problem becomes more widespread.
Meanwhile, the overall number of drug addicts in Terengganu recorded a decline of 7.2% during the first quarter of 2026. The figure fell to 7,582 people from 8,174 recorded during the same period last year.
However, Ruslin cautioned that the reduction should only be viewed as an initial positive development, as drug abuse remains a significant concern in the state.
He pointed to Dungun as an area requiring particular attention, with the district recording an 8.4% increase in drug addiction cases during the first quarter of this year.
The latest figures underline the need for continued prevention, enforcement and community-based efforts, particularly to prevent drug abuse from reaching children and other vulnerable groups.
