Police Probe Incomplete Jalur Gemilang Headscarves Sold At Supermarket

Date:

Police have launched an investigation after a video showing headscarves featuring an incomplete depiction of the Jalur Gemilang at a local supermarket was circulated on social media.

Subang Jaya district police chief Assistant Commissioner Wan Azlan Wan Mamat said police received a report regarding the matter at about 4.49pm on Saturday.

Initial checks found that several of the headscarves displayed an incomplete design of the Malaysian flag and had been supplied to the supermarket by a supplier.

The supermarket subsequently removed the affected headscarves from its sales area as an immediate precaution to ensure they were not sold to customers, Wan Azlan said in a statement.

Police are investigating the case under Section 5 of the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act 1963, which deals with the improper use of the Jalur Gemilang.

Those convicted under the provision may face a fine of up to RM20,000, imprisonment for up to three years, or both.

Investigations are also being conducted under Section 504 of the Penal Code for intentionally insulting another person with the intention of provoking a breach of the peace.

A conviction under the section carries a maximum jail term of two years, a fine, or both.

Police urged anyone with information about the headscarves or their distribution to assist the investigation by contacting the Subang Jaya district police headquarters at 03-78627100.

The incident has also prompted renewed attention on the proper display and use of national symbols, particularly as Malaysia approaches its National Day celebrations.
