Woman Drowns After Boat Hits Tree Stump At Tasik Kenyir

Date:

A 63-year-old woman drowned after the boat she was travelling in struck a tree stump and overturned near Gua Bewah, Tasik Kenyir, on Saturday.

Hulu Terengganu district police chief Superintendent Sharudin Abdul Wahab said the victim, Wan Esah Wan Daud, was from Felda Chiku, Kelantan, and had travelled to Tasik Kenyir with 27 family members for a holiday aboard a houseboat.

He said Wan Esah and three other family members left the houseboat at about 11am on a smaller boat, heading towards Taman Negara.

The group later reached Gua Bewah at around 4pm, where they disembarked from the moored houseboat to explore the area by boat.

However, the outing turned tragic when their boat struck a tree stump, causing it to capsize.

Wan Esah was thrown into the water and became trapped beneath the overturned boat. Other family members managed to pull her out and brought her back to the houseboat.

Sharudin said the victim’s son immediately attempted CPR, but she showed no signs of regaining consciousness.

She was subsequently transported in a Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) boat for about an hour before reaching the mainland at Tasik Kenyir.

Wan Esah, who had a history of lung disease, was later confirmed dead due to drowning.

Police urged members of the public to remain vigilant and prioritise safety when taking part in recreational activities, particularly around lakes and rivers where unexpected hazards may pose serious risks.
