Budget 2027: Drivers Convicted Of Drink-Driving Or Drug Use To Face Mandatory Compensation

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced proposed amendments to the Road Transport Act under Budget 2027, requiring drivers convicted of offences involving drink-driving or drug use to pay compensation to their victims.

Under the proposed changes, motorists found guilty of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs will be required to provide compensation as part of the measures outlined in the Budget 2027 materials.

The amendment aims to strengthen accountability among motorists and ensure victims receive compensation following offences involving impaired driving.

The proposal forms part of the government’s broader efforts to improve road safety and address the consequences of dangerous driving.
