MCMC Warns Public Against Sharing Violent School Incident Videos In Kuching

Date:

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has urged the public, including media practitioners, not to upload, share or circulate videos of a dangerous weapon incident at a school in Kuching, Sarawak.

In a statement, MCMC said distributing footage depicting violence, particularly involving children, could affect the privacy, dignity and emotional well-being of those involved and their families.

The commission also warned that revealing the identities of children could violate Section 15 of the Child Act 2001 (Act 611).

It added that sharing such content could also result in legal action under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588), if the material breaches the relevant legal provisions.

MCMC said it was working with social media platform providers to address the circulation of the footage, including taking steps to remove related content.

The commission urged anyone who had already uploaded or shared the videos to delete them immediately.

It also reminded the public not to redistribute the footage, stressing that protecting the children’s privacy and avoiding interference with the authorities’ investigation were essential.
