Three Killed After Minibus Crashes Into Elephant In National Park

Date:

Three people were killed after a minibus crashed into an elephant while travelling through Murchison Falls National Park on Sunday night.

Shocking footage circulating online showed the badly damaged white minibus overturned inside a roadside ditch following the deadly collision.

According to Ugandan police, the accident happened while the vehicle was travelling from Arua city to the capital, Kampala.

Authorities said the driver struck an elephant that was crossing the road before losing control of the vehicle.

“Three occupants died on the spot while four others, including the driver, sustained injuries,” police said in a statement shared on social media.

The conditions of the injured victims have not yet been officially confirmed.

Officials also did not disclose the condition of the elephant involved in the crash.

Video footage from the scene appeared to show the animal walking away after the collision.

The Uganda Wildlife Authority later confirmed the incident and reminded motorists to drive carefully when passing through wildlife-protected areas.

“Motorists travelling through protected areas are strongly advised to drive cautiously, as wild animals frequently cross the roads,” the agency warned.

The fatal collision occurred during the evening when visibility along roads inside the national park is often poor.

Authorities previously revealed that speeding vehicles inside Murchison Falls National Park kill an estimated three wild animals daily.

Road accidents remain common in Uganda, while encounters between humans and wildlife have reportedly increased as expanding communities move closer to protected animal habitats.

The tragedy comes amid growing concern over dangerous human-wildlife interactions across several countries, particularly involving elephants.
