19-Year-Old University Student Dies After Falling From Taipei 101 Shopping Mall

Date:

A 19-year-old university student died after falling from a high floor inside the iconic Taipei 101 shopping mall on Sunday morning, shocking visitors and staff at one of Taiwan’s most famous landmarks.

According to Taiwanese media reports, the incident happened at around 10.49am before the mall officially opened for business at 11am. However, ticketing operations at the observatory on the fifth floor had already begun at the time.

Security personnel conducting patrols reportedly discovered the young woman lying motionless on a second-floor platform before immediately contacting emergency services.

Paramedics and police rushed to the scene and found the victim unconscious with no signs of breathing or heartbeat. She was later transported to Taipei Medical University Hospital for emergency treatment but was pronounced dead at 11.41am due to severe injuries.

Authorities later identified the victim as a 19-year-old university freshman surnamed Yang from Taoyuan, who reportedly commuted daily to Taipei for her studies.

Police initially found no identification documents on the victim and later confirmed her identity through CCTV footage and a handbag left at the scene.

Investigators said surveillance footage showed the student entering the shopping mall from the fifth-floor observatory ticketing area shortly before the incident occurred.

Police have so far ruled out foul play after finding no signs of external involvement during initial investigations.

The victim’s mother reportedly rushed to the hospital after being informed of the tragedy and broke down in tears upon identifying her daughter’s body.

Family members later told police that the teenager had recently been struggling emotionally and had complained about difficulties and unhappiness related to campus life.

As Taipei 101 is one of Taiwan’s most internationally recognised tourist attractions, local authorities are treating the case seriously.

The Xinyi District Police Division has since referred the matter to prosecutors, while forensic examinations are expected to be carried out to determine the exact cause of death.
