A 30-year-old mechanic is still receiving treatment at Hospital Seberang Jaya after being brutally attacked and slashed with a parang by a man he knew in an incident that shocked residents in Telok Ayer Tawar, Penang.
Penang Police Chief Azizee Ismail confirmed that the victim sustained severe injuries to multiple parts of his body, including five stitches to the head. He also suffered deep wounds to his back, a severed index finger and middle finger on his right hand, while his left wrist was nearly severed.
Authorities said the suspect, a 47-year-old man, was arrested in Butterworth shortly after the incident and has been remanded for seven days to assist investigations. The case has raised concerns over rising violent crimes involving bladed weapons.
Investigations revealed that the suspect tested positive for methamphetamine and also has a criminal history involving two previous offences along with 11 drug-related records. Such findings have further intensified scrutiny over drug-related violence in the area.
Police received a report at around 9.16pm on Sunday, with preliminary investigations indicating that the attack occurred at a vehicle workshop along Jalan Besar in Telok Ayer Tawar. The incident reportedly stemmed from a confrontation between individuals known to each other.
Authorities also confirmed that closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage captured the violent assault. The case is being investigated under Section 326 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt using dangerous weapons.
