A violent dispute in Koh Samui has ended in tragedy after a taxi driver was shot dead following a long-running feud that reportedly escalated through social media challenges and ongoing business conflicts.
Police in Surat Thani are now urgently hunting multiple suspects believed to be involved in the deadly attack, which took place at around 1.25am on May 24.
Investigators from Bo Phut Police Station confirmed that one suspect, identified only as “Boy”, has already been arrested under charges including premeditated murder, illegal possession of firearms and public firearm offences.
According to investigators, Boy was allegedly one of the men present during the attack and reportedly approached the victim’s taxi before knocking on the window and ordering him to stop.
Police said the victim, identified as Mr. Firth, was driving foreign tourists at the time when a group allegedly blocked his vehicle and forced open the doors.
A violent fight then broke out, during which the victim reportedly used a knife to defend himself and stabbed one of the attackers.
Authorities said another suspect later grabbed a gun and fired six shots at the taxi driver, killing him at the scene before the group fled.
Police later discovered a black pickup truck believed to have been used during the escape abandoned near Khao Pom and seized it as evidence.
Investigators are currently coordinating operations across ferry terminals and escape routes on Koh Samui as they continue searching for the remaining suspects.
So far, arrest warrants have reportedly been issued for several additional individuals linked to the case.
Sources revealed the conflict between both sides had allegedly been building for a long time and involved disputes over taxi customers and business territory.
The victim’s family and another taxi-related family were reportedly connected through relatives and worked from the same private taxi stand.
However, tensions later escalated into arguments, with both sides allegedly accusing each other of stealing customers and affecting income.
The situation reportedly worsened after the victim’s father-in-law allegedly hired women working at beer bars to attract customers for his taxi services.
Authorities also believe social media exchanges and public challenges between the victim and rivals further intensified the hostility.
Before the shooting, the victim was allegedly seen confronting rivals multiple times while driving around the area.
Police said respected elders had attempted to mediate the dispute previously, but the conflict remained unresolved.
The shocking killing has sparked concern among locals and tourists in Koh Samui, one of Thailand’s most popular holiday destinations, as police continue efforts to track down all remaining suspects involved in the deadly attack.
