Unemployed Man Jailed After Attempted Murder Of Police Inspector In Lereh Incident

Date:

A 31-year-old unemployed man who attempted to kill a police inspector after issuing a chilling threat to officers has been sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment by the Ayer Keroh Sessions Court.

Muhammad Fairus Abdullah pleaded guilty to two charges before Judge Raja Noor Adilla Raja Mahyaldin, following an incident in which he allegedly wielded a kerambit and threatened to kill any police officer attempting to arrest him.

The court heard that the first charge involved an attempted murder of a 40-year-old inspector, where the accused swung a kerambit towards the victim with intent that could have caused death. The incident occurred around 1am last Saturday in Batu 6, Lereh, Tanjung Kling.

He was charged under Section 307 of the Penal Code, which provides for imprisonment of up to 10 years, along with caning upon conviction. The second charge involved possession of a dangerous weapon, namely a kerambit, in a public place without lawful justification under the Arms Act 1958.

Court proceedings revealed that the confrontation escalated after the suspect fled approximately 300 metres when the officer identified himself as police. He was also seen holding a screwdriver during the incident and repeatedly shouted threats, including that he would kill any police officer trying to arrest him.

Despite being subdued after a conducted energy weapon was deployed, the accused continued resisting arrest before finally surrendering following a warning shot. The court ordered the sentences for both charges to run concurrently from the date of arrest.

In a separate Magistrate’s Court proceeding, the accused also pleaded guilty to three additional charges, including criminal intimidation, voluntarily causing hurt to a public servant, and obstructing a public officer. He was sentenced to seven months’ imprisonment for each charge, also to run concurrently.

The case has been widely seen as another reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers during arrest operations, particularly when suspects are armed and aggressive.
