A 22-year-old Malaysian man has been arrested after allegedly attempting to smuggle more than 8.6kg of cannabis and over 1.5kg of methamphetamine into Singapore on August 1.
If convicted, he could face the death penalty under Singapore’s strict drug laws.
In a statement released on Monday, the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said its officers directed the man’s car for further inspection at the Woodlands Checkpoint, where they discovered a box containing two packages of suspected drugs in the vehicle’s boot.
Officers from the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) were then called to the scene, and a more thorough search uncovered additional drugs hidden in the boot.
Authorities seized a total of 8.646kg of cannabis and 1.569kg of methamphetamine (syabu).
The ICA said the drugs have an estimated street value of more than S$361,000 (approximately RM1.2 million) and could have supplied around 2,132 drug abusers for one week.
Investigations by the CNB are ongoing.
Under Singapore law, anyone convicted of importing or exporting more than 250g of methamphetamine or 500g of cannabis faces the mandatory death penalty.
Last month, Singapore authorities arrested 100 individuals during a nationwide anti-drug operation that also resulted in the seizure of drugs worth more than S$34,000 (about RM113,000).
