The High Court will deliver its decision on Aug 12 on whether Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor can defer the payment of RM67.5 million to Lebanese jewellery company Global Royalty Trading SAL.
Judicial Commissioner Marianne Antoinette Ghani set the date after hearing submissions from both parties today.
Rosmah was represented by lawyer Mohd Reza Rahim, while Global Royalty Trading SAL was represented by lawyer Venothani Rajagopal.
Previously, on June 10, High Court judge Datuk Quay Chew Soon ordered Rosmah, 75, to pay RM67.5 million to the jewellery company over 43 pieces of jewellery allegedly given to her under a loan arrangement.
The court had ordered the payment to be made within one month from the date of the judgment.
In his ruling, Quay said the court found a prima facie case that Rosmah had failed to return the jewellery to Global Royalty, which amounted to negligence.
The judge also said Rosmah failed to prove her claim that all 43 pieces of jewellery had been taken by authorities.
Quay further dismissed Rosmah’s claim against the Inspector-General of Police and the government over allegations that the missing jewellery had been seized during a police raid in connection with investigations into the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) financial scandal in 2018.
The court was informed that Rosmah had maintained the jewellery was provided to her for viewing under a consignment arrangement.
Quay said the authenticity of the consignment notes was never disputed in previous proceedings, adding that Rosmah herself had relied on the documents when presenting her case and testimony.
Global Royalty Trading SAL had earlier filed a US$14.57 million lawsuit against Rosmah over the alleged loss of more than 40 pieces of jewellery said to have been loaned to her.
