A former Tabung Haji (TH) chief operating officer (COO) who was scheduled to be charged with criminal offences linked to the institution’s governance did not appear at the Sessions Court here on Thursday after being hospitalised for a heart problem.
His lawyer, Wan Azwan Aiman Wan Fakhruddin, confirmed the matter during proceedings before Judge Awang Kerisnada Awang Mahmud.
The lawyer said his client, who holds the title of Datuk, was admitted to a hospital here on Aug 31.
The case is linked to issues surrounding TH’s financial crisis, which emerged after a mismatch between its assets and liabilities came to light and led to the implementation of a large-scale recovery plan.
The developments were later followed by the establishment of a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) to investigate issues arising from the crisis, including TH’s investments in hotel leases in Makkah and Madinah.
On Aug 14, seven individuals were detained to assist investigations by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
Those detained included a former minister, a former chief executive officer (CEO) of a shipping company, a construction company director, a former company director and four former members of TH’s senior management.
The former COO was among the former senior TH management members detained in connection with the investigation.
