Four police corporals have claimed trial at the Magistrate’s Court to charges of jointly extorting RM10,000 from a salesman by allegedly instilling fear of a heavier court fine three years ago.
The accused — Mohd Al Hafis Sairudin, Mohd Azmi Mohd Ghozali, Muhamad Azlan Zakaria and Muhammad Hanif Abdul Talib — are alleged to have committed the offence against Danny Goh Ngee Guan by claiming he could be fined at least RM50,000 if taken to court.
According to the charge, the group allegedly caused fear that led the victim to hand over RM10,000 at an apartment in Jalan Kepong, Sentul on 23 December 2023.
The offence falls under Section 384 of the Penal Code read together with Section 34, which provides for imprisonment of up to 10 years, with possible fine or whipping upon conviction.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Amritpreet Kaur Randhawa did not offer bail, citing the seriousness of the offence, while defence counsel Ahmad Ikram Ab Halim requested minimal bail on grounds that all four are family breadwinners and had cooperated during investigations.
Magistrate Farah Nabihah Muhamad Dan allowed bail of RM8,000 for each accused with two sureties, along with additional conditions requiring monthly police reporting and a prohibition from contacting witnesses or the victim.
The court fixed 8 July for mention of the case.
