A 19-year-old man was arrested by police less than two hours after he was allegedly caught recording a woman inside a restaurant toilet in Bekenu, Miri, yesterday.
Miri District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah, confirmed that the suspect was detained at about 11.30am by officers from the Bekenu Police Station.
He said the arrest followed public alarm after a 28-second video showing the suspect being apprehended by members of the public went viral on social media.
According to initial investigations, the incident is believed to have occurred around 10am when the suspect allegedly used his mobile phone to record a woman inside the restaurant’s toilet.
The act was reportedly noticed by the victim, who immediately lodged a police report.
Police said swift action was taken based on the report, leading to the suspect’s arrest on the same day.
Authorities also seized a mobile phone believed to have been used during the incident for further forensic examination.
The suspect, who works as a lorry assistant, was found to have no prior criminal record.
Police have classified the case under Section 377D of the Penal Code for outraging modesty, which carries a maximum jail term of up to two years upon conviction.
