Sarawak-owned airline AirBorneo is evaluating the possibility of launching direct international flights to Miri while also planning to strengthen domestic connectivity between the state’s major cities.
Deputy Transport Minister Jerip Susil said the Sarawak government remains committed to improving international air connectivity and attracting more direct routes into the state.
According to Dr Jerip, the state government is working closely with Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad, the Sarawak Tourism Board and other related agencies to engage airline operators in exploring new international routes based on market demand and commercial viability.
“In addition, the Sarawak government, through AirBorneo, is evaluating opportunities for direct international routes to Sarawak, particularly within Asean and nearby regional markets,” he said during the State Legislative Assembly sitting on Thursday.
Dr Jerip added that AirBorneo is also studying commercial flight routes linking Kuching, Sibu, Bintulu and Miri as part of efforts to improve accessibility and economic integration across Sarawak.
He said the proposed routes are expected to begin operations from the third quarter of 2027 onwards, subject to aircraft availability and commercial feasibility.
Dr Jerip was responding to a question raised by Adam Yii during the question-and-answer session.
Addressing a supplementary question on incentives for airlines introducing new international routes, Dr Jerip said support currently includes airport charge rebates, joint marketing initiatives, promotional assistance and other facilitation measures.
He explained that the incentives are provided through collaboration between MAHB, Tourism Malaysia and the Sarawak Tourism Board to encourage airlines to launch and sustain international routes into the state.
