PM Anwar: Malaysia Will Not Support Or Oppose Jho Low Clemency Request In US

Date:

Malaysia has neither objected to nor will it support any application for pardon by fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho, or Jho Low, should he seek clemency from United States President Donald Trump.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the matter is an internal decision of the US government and not something Malaysia intends to pursue.

“That is the US government’s decision. As of now, we will not move in that direction and we will not support them,” he told reporters after officiating the National Youth Day 2026 celebration on Friday.

Anwar was responding to questions on whether Malaysia would make any official representation to US authorities to oppose a potential pardon for Jho Low.

Reports have emerged that Jho Low is seeking a presidential pardon from Trump.

According to a Wall Street Journal (WSJ) report on Tuesday, the application was filed within the past few weeks.

If approved, the pardon would remove all criminal charges Jho Low faces in the United States.

The report also revealed that the US Department of Justice (DoJ) website lists an active request under Jho Low’s name.

It stated that the application is classified as a “Pardon after Completion of Sentence” filed this year.

Jho Low remains one of the most wanted individuals over allegations that he was the mastermind behind the multi-billion-ringgit 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) corruption scandal involving the Malaysian state investment fund.
