RM12 Billion Lost At Tabung Haji, PM Anwar Says ‘Sakau’ Happened

Date:

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has maintained that the term “sakau” is appropriate when referring to the loss of billions of ringgit involving Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH), as highlighted in the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) report on the institution.

Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, said the term should not be avoided if the facts point to funds being lost from an institution entrusted with managing the savings of Malaysian Muslims.

“There are people who do not like the term ‘sakau’. I want to repeat here in Melaka that there was ‘sakau’ in Tabung Haji. RM12 billion was lost — is that not ‘sakau’? There was indeed ‘sakau’,” he said.

He made the remarks while delivering his presidential policy speech at the 2026 Keadilan National Congress in Melaka today.

Anwar said those responsible for the losses should face appropriate action regardless of their position or political background.

He stressed that accountability must remain a priority when public or entrusted funds are involved, particularly when the consequences of financial mismanagement extend beyond the individuals directly responsible.

“The people who took the money were only certain individuals, but the ones who have to pay and bear the burden are all Malaysians, regardless of race or religion,” he said.

His remarks come amid renewed attention on the findings of the RCI involving TH and questions surrounding the institution’s financial management.

Anwar said the issue should not be reduced to political considerations, as the impact of such actions ultimately affects the wider public and the trust placed in institutions responsible for managing people’s savings.
